Paddles: The Heart of Your Game

Model lists go stale about as fast as they get published, so here is something more durable: how to judge any paddle you pick up. Four numbers tell you almost everything.

• Core thickness: Usually 13, 14 or 16 mm. Thicker leans toward control and a softer feel. Thinner leans toward power and a livelier pop.
• Face material: Carbon fiber grips the ball for spin and feels precise. Fiberglass is livelier and adds pop. Plenty of faces blend the two.
• Weight: Under about 7.7 oz is light and quick at the net. Roughly 7.8 to 8.2 oz is the middle ground most players land in. Heavier trades hand speed for power and stability.
• Grip length and circumference: The most overlooked spec of the four. A longer grip leaves room for a two-handed backhand, and the circumference should let your fingertips just barely reach your palm.

If a product page will not tell you those four things, that is information too. And if you can borrow a paddle for a few games at open play before buying, do it. Fifteen minutes on court tells you more than any spec sheet, including ours. Ours is in the shop when you are ready.
